Preparing is Caring

When I start working with people and ask what it is they want to change about their relationship with food, it's always interesting to hear people express their desire to not care about it. They are sick of being obsessed, of thinking about food so much. What I've found though is that thinking about something that affects me as much as food is not a bad thing. The biggest thing that's made the difference for me is that I actually let myself care. I let myself care enough to prepare foods I love, that make me feel good. I care enough to cook for myself regularly, to bring snacks and meals with me so I have what I really want to eat and like, instead of settling for what's "convenient". I mean, we used to have to hunt or toil in the field before getting to eat, so a little extra attention and forethought in my day seems like a good deal to me by comparison! Rather than resent it, I say let yourself enjoy giving yourself the care you deserve and desire.

A few tips for caring:
One night this week cook enough food to bring healthy leftovers with you to work.
Prepare snack foods you like to bring with you while you're out, i.e. a single serving bag of dried fruit and nuts, baby carrots, a piece of fruit...
At the start of your day create a basic guideline of what and when you plan to eat so you don't get stuck.
